Performance Max vs. Search Campaigns: Which Should a Local Business Run?

Performance Max promises reach across all of Google; Search gives you control. Here’s how local businesses should choose — and why many should run both.

Open a new Google Ads account today and Google will nudge you toward Performance Max — the campaign type that runs your ads across Search, Maps, YouTube, Gmail, Discover and the Display network from a single setup, steered by Google’s automation. It’s powerful. It’s also easy to waste money on if you don’t understand what it’s doing.

Here’s a practical comparison for local businesses deciding between Performance Max (PMax) and classic Search campaigns.

How Search campaigns work

Search campaigns show text ads when people search for keywords you choose. You control the keywords, the match types, the ad copy and the bids. When someone searches “AC repair Spring TX,” you decide whether to show up and what to say. The tradeoff: you only reach people actively searching, and you need to manage the account carefully.

How Performance Max works

PMax takes your goals, budget, creative assets (headlines, images, video) and audience signals, then lets Google decide where and when to show ads across its entire inventory. It can find customers you would never have reached with keywords alone. The tradeoff: less control and less visibility into exactly which searches and placements are driving results.

When Search should lead

  • High-intent services where people search when they’re ready to buy — repairs, emergencies, appointments.
  • Tight budgets where every click needs to count.
  • Regulated or sensitive categories where you need control over messaging and placement.
  • Brand protection — making sure you own searches for your own business name.

When Performance Max shines

  • Strong conversion tracking. PMax optimizes toward what you measure. If you track real leads, calls and sales, it can find more of them.
  • Good creative assets. Quality images and video give it more to work with across YouTube and Display.
  • Multiple locations or a product catalog, where automation can manage complexity at scale.
  • Enough budget and data for the algorithm to learn.

The trap to avoid

The most common mistake we see is a business launching PMax with weak tracking — counting page views or form starts as “conversions.” The algorithm then happily finds more of those cheap actions, not more customers. Before running PMax, make sure you’re tracking qualified leads and calls, ideally with call tracking and offline conversion imports.

Our usual recommendation: both, in the right order

For most local businesses we start with tightly built Search campaigns to capture high-intent demand and prove what a lead is worth. Once tracking is clean and the account has data, we add Performance Max to expand reach — with brand terms excluded and clear asset groups for each service. Then we compare cost per qualified lead across both and shift budget toward what works.

The bottom line

Search gives you control; Performance Max gives you reach. The winning setup depends on your tracking, budget and goals. Our search marketing team can audit your account and show you which mix makes sense — start with a free marketing audit.
