The Holiday Marketing Checklist for Local Businesses

For many local businesses, the holiday season delivers an outsized share of the entire year's revenue. But it's also when competition is fiercest and customer attention is scarcest — everyone is marketing at once. The businesses that win the holidays don't wing it; they prepare. Here's a checklist to make sure you're ready to capture your share instead of scrambling.

Work through these in the fall, well before the rush, and the season runs on rails.

Get your site holiday-ready

Update your hours (including any holiday closures), promotions, and key pages early so customers always see accurate, current information. Nothing frustrates a holiday shopper like wrong hours or a dead promo link.

Just as important, make sure your website is fast. Holiday traffic surges, and a slow site that buckles under the load loses exactly the customers you worked to attract. Speed is a holiday revenue issue, not just a technical one.

Plan your offers and messaging

Decide your promotions, their dates, and the story around them ahead of time. A planned campaign with a clear hook and a content calendar beats a last-minute "let's post something" scramble every time.

Map out your key dates — Black Friday, the gift-buying weeks, last-order deadlines, New Year — and what you'll say for each, so you're executing a plan in December rather than inventing one.

Show up where shoppers are

Holiday shoppers research across channels — search, social, email, and ads. Layer them so you're visible wherever people are planning their spending, and so each channel reinforces the others.

Email is especially powerful here: your existing list is full of past customers ready to buy again, and reaching them costs nothing. Don't let the holidays pass without a few well-timed emails to people who already know you.

Don't forget the follow-up

The holidays bring a wave of new and returning customers — capture them for the long term. A simple post-holiday thank-you, a review request, or a January offer turns one-time holiday buyers into repeat customers, extending the season's value well into the new year.
