How to Find the Right Influencers for Your Business

Influencer marketing lives or dies on one decision: who you partner with. Pick well and a single post can drive a wave of real business; pick poorly and you've paid for a vanity metric that produced nothing. Follower count is the flashiest number and the least reliable, so here's the vetting process we actually use to choose creators.

Work through these in order — each filters out partners who'd waste your budget.

Audience fit comes first

Before you look at follower count, look at who those followers are. Are they your potential customers? Do they live in your service area? Are they interested in what you offer? A creator with 5,000 followers who are all local and relevant is worth more than one with 50,000 scattered, unrelated ones.

Fit beats reach every single time. The right 5,000 people will out-convert the wrong 500,000, so start by matching the creator's audience to your ideal customer.

Check real engagement, not just followers

Follower counts can be bought or inflated, so look past them to genuine interaction: meaningful comments (not just emojis), saves, shares, and replies from the creator. A healthy engagement rate signals an audience that's actually paying attention.

Be wary of accounts with huge followings but very few comments or generic, bot-like interaction — they look impressive in a pitch and deliver nothing in results. Authentic engagement is the real currency.

Values and reliability

For the length of a campaign, a creator becomes a face of your brand. Make sure their tone, content, and values align with yours — a single off-brand or controversial post can do real damage by association.

Just as important: are they professional to work with? Do they respond, hit deadlines, and disclose partnerships properly? A reliable mid-size creator beats a flaky big one every time.

Start with a test before you commit

You don't have to bet big on an unproven partner. Run a small, trackable first campaign — a single post or short collaboration with a unique link or code — and let the results tell you whether to invest more. Vet on paper, then confirm with a low-risk test before scaling the relationship.
