For years, local search followed a simple pattern: someone typed “dentist near me,” Google showed three businesses in the map pack, and the best-optimized profile got the call. That pattern is changing. Google’s AI Overviews now sit at the top of many searches, summarizing options before a customer ever scrolls to a map — and they’re starting to show up for local, “near me” intent too.
For businesses in The Woodlands, Spring, Katy and across Greater Houston, that’s not a reason to panic. It’s a reason to tighten the fundamentals, because the businesses AI Overviews choose to mention are overwhelmingly the ones that already look trustworthy, complete and consistent online.
What AI Overviews actually are
An AI Overview is a generated summary Google places above traditional results. It pulls from web pages, reviews and business data to answer the question directly — often naming specific businesses and linking to their sites or profiles. For a search like “best brunch spot in The Woodlands,” the overview might describe two or three places and why they stand out.
The important shift: the customer may form an opinion before they ever see your star rating in the map pack. If your business isn’t part of that summary, you’re starting from behind.
Proximity still matters — but it’s not the whole game
A large 2025 study by Local Falcon, covering 60,000 search simulations across more than 4,400 businesses, found that businesses closer to the searcher were somewhat more likely to appear in AI Overviews — but proximity no longer decided the order the way it does in the classic map pack. Visibility also swung more for some business types than others, especially service businesses.
In plain English: being nearby helps you get considered, but the information Google can find about you decides whether you get mentioned and how you’re described.
What gets a local business mentioned
- A complete Google Business Profile. Categories, services, hours, attributes, photos and a description that clearly says what you do and where. AI summaries lean heavily on structured business data.
- Reviews that say something. “Great service!” helps your rating, but reviews that mention specific services, staff and neighborhoods give AI something concrete to summarize.
- Clear, specific website pages. One page per core service, and pages for the cities you serve, written in plain language that answers real questions.
- Consistent details everywhere. Your name, address and phone number should match across your site, Google, Yelp, Apple Maps and industry directories.
- Answers to the questions customers actually ask. Pricing ranges, timelines, what to expect — FAQ sections are ideal raw material for AI answers.
Write for answers, not just keywords
Traditional SEO taught businesses to target phrases. AI search rewards pages that resolve a question completely. Instead of a thin page titled “HVAC Repair Spring TX,” build a page that explains common repairs, typical costs, how fast you can get there and what areas you cover. The page still ranks for the phrase — and it’s far more likely to be quoted.

Don’t abandon the map pack
AI Overviews don’t replace the map pack; they sit above it. Plenty of customers still scroll, compare ratings and tap “Call.” The businesses winning right now treat both as one system: a strong profile and reviews feed the map pack, and the same signals feed the AI summary. How to track whether it’s working
Rankings alone won’t tell the full story anymore. Watch Google Business Profile insights for calls, direction requests and website clicks; check Search Console for impressions on question-style queries; and search your top services from different neighborhoods to see whether you’re being mentioned. Track leads by source so you can see whether visibility turns into revenue.
The bottom line
AI Overviews reward the businesses that make it easy for Google to understand what they do, where they do it and why customers trust them.
